Year of the Horse !
We have a fairly ambitious calendar of events planned for 2026 that we are eager to share with you.
This year we inaugurate a new series of six one-day workshops called Artlabs, each led by an artist who will guide participants in an exploration of a topic, theme, or point of inquiry which the artist is currently engaging in their own work and practice. An opportunity for anyone wanting to explore new creative possibilities and perspectives. No experience required; curiosity and imagination a plus.
Artlab 1 (Feb 15): Limitation (David Noble)
Artlab 2 (Mar 15): Proprioception (Camille Hildebrandt)
Artlab 3 (May 17): Stephanie Wood
Artlab 4 (July 19): Stories without Words (Kerry Christianson)
Artlab 5 (Sep 20): Fidelity (In Sound and Image) (David Stanford)
Artlab 6 (Nov 15): Emptiness (Meg Kaczyk)
We are also very happy to announce the continuation of our Soundlab series, which has been evolving and expanding through three iterations since its inception in August 2024. The Soundlabs are two-day events bringing musicians and sound artists from around the Salish Sea to join in one day of free play and collaborative exploration and another day of public performances here at Artlab Thuja and in the resonant spaces of the Fort Worden and Fort Flagler bunkers.
Soundlab 4 is scheduled for the weekend of June 13-14 and Soundlab 5 for the weekend of October 10-11.
We also expect to host faculty and staff of the Salish Sea Butoh Festival at Artlab Thuja from July 25 to August 2. This will mark our third year of active collaboration with and support for the festival and its organizers and we look forward to welcoming them once again.
Several meditation retreats are also in the works, beginning with a One-Day Sesshin on February 7 and more to be announced later; a Forest Dialogues retreat is planned for June 7, and an evening of Poetry & Pie on December 6.
This is just a quick sketch of the year, and still a work in progress. For more information on these events, and others that may be added as time goes by, please check by this website from time to time to see what’s happening, and ask to be added to our periodic email newsletter at artlab.thuja@icloud.org
