Artlab 2: Proprioception

Proprioceptors (sensory receptors) in our muscle spindles, golgi tendon organs, joints and vestibular system act as the body’s ‘sixth sense' or GPS system, constantly giving us feedback  that we use to orient ourselves in our bodies, and in turn the environment we are in. Our proprioceptive sense underlies the other senses, giving a foundation to our greater sensory awareness, or sensorium. The sensorium is described as being the ‘seat of sensation’ or part of our brain that integrates and processes sensory stimuli.

In this artlab, we will explore our proprioceptive sense as a foundation for awareness through a series of sensory experiences, focusing first on our somatic sense of body position, and our sense of the environment through proprioception. Then we will investigate the connection between our proprioceptive sense and the five primary senses ( touch, taste, smell, hearing, vision), and finally create multisensory scores for each other to experience, along with exploring what stimuli act as palate cleansers, or a reset. Responses to sensory stimuli are highly individual, so self-discovery and regulation will be part of our inquiry.

Sensory materials will be provided, but participants are also welcome to bring their own.

Camille Hildebrandt is a cofounder of Artlab Thuja.

A $40 workshop fee (NOTAFLOF) will cover materials, lunch, and a small honorarium. If you plan to attend, please register in advance at artlab.thuja@icloud.com
