Artlab 3: Auscultation and Data Sonification Within the Natural Soundscape

Join experimental sound artist and wellness practitioner Stephanie Wood in exploring an immersive and tactile environment of sound. Data sonification turns data into sound for analysis and interpretation. Auscultation is listening to data through a stethoscope or other amplitude‍ ‍devices.  Experiment with listening, creating , and composing to nature’s data soundscapes through non-conventional materials and means. Explore amplitude devices that change your connection to sound dialogue in play with shapes, textures and everyday objects. Explore your own connection to "found sound" and silence. This lab explores:

  1. What is the world sonically telling us about its structure and how it organizes?

  2. What tools readily assist us in cocreating data sonification with and within the natural world?

What we’ll do:

  • “Meet” instruments including gongs, bowls, sound sculptures, classic instruments, and found objects.

  • Learn data sonification basics.

  • Practice electracoustic amplitude in the natural data soundscape.

  • Incorporate instruments, amplitude, and nature into compositions.

  • Explore graphic notation, as time allows.

All are welcome.  No music or science experience required. Folks will nerd out on different things. There’s something for everyone. Just lean into the lab. It's a very supportive group of folks, especially if you're new or coming alone.

Some instruments provided (gongs, hand-held instruments, DIY’s). We’ll also gather objects from the environment. You're welcome to bring one of these:

  • A (self-defined) acoustic instrument

Can be traditional, DIY/found objects, whatever you want to experiment with—Anything goes!

OR

  • A sound amplifying or sound modifying tool

Examples include mechanics stethoscopes, contact mics, E-bows, wacky FX pedals, or something entirely unconventional.

Keep things simple and portable. We'll spend some time outdoors in PNW weather. Bring stuff to keep your things and yourself dry.
